Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller At Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (7-8, 0-2 ACC) rallied from a 0-2 deficit to tie the match 2-2, but fell 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24, 10-15) to the Louisville Cardinals (9-5, 1-1) on Sunday at the KFC YUM! Center.
 
Three Yellow Jackets had double-digit kills led by Annika Van Gunst’s career-high 27 kills on 50 swings for a .460 hitting clip. She added 13 digs for her third double-double of the season. Teegan Van Gunst tallied a double-double with 18 kills and 22 digs, while Courtney Felinski contributed 14 kills.
 
London Ackermann and Annika Olsen anchored the defense with 21 and 14 digs, respectively, while Rebecca Martin added 10 digs and dished out 56 assists.
 
Tech recorded 75 kills to Louisville’s 68, but the Cardinals were more efficient with a .286 hitting percentage to Tech’s .259.
 
The Jackets had their work cut out for them in the opening frame, rallying back from a 15-5 deficit to five points, 20-15. Tech fought back to close the gap by two points, 23-21, but Louisville escaped with set one, 25-22. The second set was Louisville’s. Tech hit .225 to Louisville’s .389 and recorded five attacking errors to the Cardinals’ one miscue.
 
Tech came out of the break with renewed energy and jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set three. The Jackets held the Cardinals to a .184 hitting clip for a 25-18 third-set victory.
 
Set four was a back-and-forth affair with 10 tied scores and four lead changes. Louisville took its first lead of the entire set for match point 24-23, but Tech did not give up as back-to-back kills from Felinski and an ace by Martin put the set away, 26-24, for Tech.
 
The deciding frame was another nail biter. Neither team led by more than one until Louisville took a two-point lead 7-5. The Cardinals didn’t give up the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 15-10, and the match 3-2.

The Jackets are back in action Friday, Oct. 3 when they welcome No. 6 Florida State to O’Keefe Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
