Volleyball Cruises Past Austin Peay, 3-0

ATLANTA – Freshman Monique Mead recorded her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs as the Georgia Tech Volleyball team (2-0) cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) win over Austin Peay (1-1) Saturday afternoon at O’Keefe Gym. The Yellow Jackets will play their final match of the Regency Suites Invitational tonight at 7 p.m. against Mercer (0-2).

“I am very pleased with how we came out today after that five-set match last night,” head coach Tonya Johnson said. “I wasn’t sure how we would respond today since it wasn’t Georgia, but we did some good things. I think we maintained throughout and got a lot of people some time.”

Sophomore Asia Stawicka had eight kills for the Jackets and hit .667, while juniors Mary Ashley Tippins and Jordan McCullers had seven digs apiece. Senior Chrissy DeMichelis had three solo blocks and Stawicka accounted for seven total blocks.

Junior Mary Ashley Tippins controlled the Yellow Jackets offense all afternoon as she had 32 assists, seven digs, two blocks and three kills while hitting .429. The Yellow Jackets held Austin Peay to a .099 percentage.

Tech won the first set behind a very balanced attack. Sophomore Bailey Hunter led the team with three kills, while five different Jackets added two apiece. In the second set, Tech trailed 8-7 before reeling off seven straight points with senior Brittany Roderick serving. Mead had five of her kills and five digs in that second set.

The third set saw the Jackets put the match away with a 6-0 run stretching the lead from 13-12 to 19-12.

The Yellow Jackets will play Mercer in the final match of the Regency Suites Invitational later tonight at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on WREK, 91.1 FM, and online at www.ramblinwreck.com. Live stats will also be available as well at www.ramblinwreck.com via Gametracker.
