COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell and Christy Striplin each advanced to the round of 32 Wednesday evening at the NCAA Singles Championships in College Station, Texas.
McDowell took her first step towards repeating as champion with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt. In her second round match, which will begin Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET, McDowell will meet either No. 5 Mallory Cecil of Duke or Southern California’s Sarah Fansler.
Striplin, competing in her first career NCAA Singles Championships, got through the first round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Northwestern’s Samantha Murray. She is scheduled to face either No. 9-16-seeded Marrit Boonstra of Florida or Cal’s Bohana Bobusic Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Yellow Jacket freshman Irina Falconi struggled in her first NCAA individual appearance, falling to Melanie Gloria of Fresno State, 6-0, 6-1. Also falling in the first round was sophomore Noelle Hickey, who dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Southern California’s Amanda Fink.
Falconi and McDowell will open the doubles draw Thursday against No. 2 seed Kristy Frilling and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame. Striplin and Hickey will face Arizona State’s Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna. Women’s doubles times will be posted Wednesday at 10 a.m. Doubles matches will not begin before 2 p.m.
