TRADITION-RICH PROGRAMS TECH, USC SET FOR HYUNDAI SUN BOWL
Extending the nation’s fourth-longest active bowl streak to 16 consecutive seasons, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head to El Paso for a New Year’s Eve match-up with the Southern California Trojans in the 79th Hyundai Sun Bowl.

The game kicks off at 2 p.m. ET (12 p.m. local) and will be televised nationally on CBS.

It’s the second straight year Tech has played in El Paso, and the Jackets are meeting the Trojans for the first time since 1973.

QUICK OUTS
• The Yellow Jackets have rushed for more yards than any FBS team since 2008 and own the nation’s fourth-leading rushing attack this season at 312.5 yards/game.
• After starting the season 2-4 (1-3 in the ACC), Georgia Tech finished the regular season strong by going 4-2, including four consecutive ACC wins to claim the Coastal Division title and earn bowl eligibility.
• Tech’s consecutive bowl streak trails only active streaks by Florida State (31), Florida (22) and Virginia Tech (20).
• Although never meeting in the postseason, USC and Tech are two of the winningest bowl teams in history. USC’s 32 wins are second-most, while Tech’s 22 are ranked 10th.
• Senior OG Omoregie Uzzi was named first-team All-ACC, his third consecutive All-ACC mention. Five other Jackets garnered All-ACC honorable mention honors.
• Senior QB Tevin Washington’s 19 rushing TDs this season are the second-most nationally among quarterbacks, and he’s fourth in the ACC in scoring at 8.8 points/game.
• With 37 rushing TDs in his career, Washington owns the all-time Tech and ACC records for rushing TDs by a QB.
• Sophomore return specialist Jamal Golden is second in the ACC and ninth nationally in kick return average (29.0 avg). He totalled 230 KO return yards at UNC, including a 100-yard return for TD — his second KO return TD this season.
• Senior AB Orwin Smith’s career average of 9.4 yards per carry is the highest by any active FBS player with 1,000 yards.
• Tech’s defense pitched a second-half shutout of Florida State in the ACC Championship, and has not allowed a fourth-quarter point in three games.

ABOUT THE HYUNDAI SUN BOWL
• The Sun Bowl and Sugar Bowl are the second-oldest bowl games behind the Rose Bowl. The inaugural Sun Bowl was played in 1935.
• The Hyundai Sun Bowl’s association with the ACC began in two years ago when Miami played Notre Dame.
• Tech was defeated in overtime by Utah in last year’s Sun Bowl, 30-27, in front of a crowd of 48,123.
• Tech is the first repeat Sun Bowl team since Purdue in 2001 and 2002.
• CBS has broadcast the Sun Bowl every year since 1968.

TECH-USC SERIES
• USC leads the all-time series 2-1.
• The two teams will meet for the first time since 1973, and the Yellow Jackets and Trojans will meet for the first time in a bowl game.
• USC has won the last two meetings, including a 23-6 win on Sept. 22, 1973 in Atlanta.
• In each of the three previous meetings, the Trojans were ranked in the top 10 nationally, including a No. 1 ranking in 1973.
• The Yellow Jackets and Trojans first met on the gridiron in 1961, a 27-7 Tech victory in Los Angeles.
• In all three previous meetings, John McKay was the head coach at USC. Bobby Dodd, Bud Carson and Bill Fulcher coached one game each for Georgia Tech against the Trojans.
• Georgia Tech is 6-10 all-time against teams in the Pac-12, including a 30-27 overtime loss to Utah in the Hyundai Sun Bowl last season. Tech’s previous game against a Pac-12 team was a 24-14 win over Stanford in the 2001 Seattle Bowl.
• Tech is 3-1 vs. Pac-12 teams in bowl play, 3-1 if you count the loss to Utah in 2005 (the Utes were not yet conference members). The Jackets also beat Stanford in the 1991 Aloha Bowl and Tech beat Cal in the Jan. 1, 1929 Rose Bowl.
• The Yellow Jackets’ first ever bowl game came against California in the 1929 Rose Bowl – the famous “Wrong Way Riegels” game, and an 8-7 Tech victory.
• Tech is 6-8 all-time against teams from California.
• Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson has never coached against USC. Johnson has coached against two Pac-12 teams – Oregon State (0-1) and Stanford (1-1).
