PALO ALTO, Calif. – Top-Ranked Kristi Miller won eight consecutive games after falling behind 1-0 in her first set against 13th-ranked Cristelle Grier, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 Singles Championships with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the No. 9-16 seeded senior from Northwestern Friday morning at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
With the win, Miller, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advances to play the winner of this afternoon’s match between sixth-seeded Amanda Fink of Southern Cal and No. 9-16 seed Theresa Logar of Stanford tomorrow morning. Times for the quarterfinals singles matches will be announced following the conclusion of singles play Friday evening.
Miller, now 41-6 on the season in singles play, is just one victory shy of tying the Georgia Tech single-season mark for most singles wins in a season, which she set in 2005. With her victory in the Round of 16, the All-American also becomes the first Yellow Jacket to advance to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Singles Championships.
Miller will now turn her sights to this afternoon’s match in which she and senior Lyndsay Shosho will be competing against Southern Cal’s 18th-ranked duo of Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships. The Round of 16 match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. PT at the Taube Tennis Center.
