STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

March 7-13, 2011

Mark Pope, Baseball, Junior, Marietta, Ga.

Pope pitched his second straight complete game shutout, holding Maryland to just four hits while improving to 4-0 on the season. He had six strikeouts, and did not issue any walks in the outing. The four hits allowed were all singles, three of them coming on infield hits. He faced just three batters over the minimum.

Kristen Adkins, Softball, Senior, McKinney, Texas

Adkins went 2-0 with two saves on the week as Georgia Tech went 5-0 and has now won 10 straight games. Adkins did not allow a run this week and has now pitched 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings. She gave up just four hits and two walks on the week while striking out 17 batters in 12.2 innings. Adkins held opponents to a .093 batting average. She picked up wins against Belmont and Bowling Green and had a save against Penn State as well as Georgia State. In the Georgia State game on Sunday, she came into the game with a 1-0 lead and runners on first and third with just one out in the fifth inning. She got out of them jam and allowed just one base runner via an error the rest of the way.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (23-10, 9-5 ACC, national rank #24)

The 24th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s basketball earned a No. 5 seed in the Dayton Region of the NCAA Tournament and will play 12th-seeded Bowling Green on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN. That game will be played in Columbus, Ohio. Follow on Twitter, @GTWBB.

BASEBALL (12-4, 3-0 ACC, national ranking #24)

Georgia Tech, currently on a seven game win streak, will host Georgia Southern (11-5, 3-0 SoCon) for two midweek games before continuing Atlantic Coast Conference play with NC State (8-7, 1-2 ACC) over the weekend at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch against the Eagles is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets and the Wolfpack will square off at 7 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

SOFTBALL (17-4, 0-0 ACC)

The Yellow Jackets take a 10-game winning streak into Tuesday’s doubleheader at Mewborn Field against Georgia Southern. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m. Tech then hits the road for a seven-day spring break trip to South Carolina. Over the weekend, the Yellow Jackets will participate in the Chanticleer Challenge in Myrtle Beach and face Kansas, Lipscomb (twice), Providence and the host-school Coastal Carolina. MEN’S TENNIS (10-2, 1-1 ACC, ITA ranking #16)

Following a tough, 4-3 loss at 32nd-ranked Miami Sunday, the Yellow Jackets are off for 12 days, resuming play March 25 and 27 with ACC matches against NC State and Wake Forest at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Follow Tech tennis on @GT_MTEN.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (6-5, 0-1 ACC, ITA ranking #17)

The Yellow Jackets return to action after a two-week long hiatus when it travels to Nashville to face the eighth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4) in a 1 p.m. ET match. In its last outing, Georgia Tech dropped a tough 4-3 decision to No. 12 Miami on March 5, while the Commodores are coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 21 Tennessee on March 13.

GOLF (National rank #4)

Coming off a disappointing ninth-place finish at the SHC masters last weekend in Las Vegas, the 4th-ranked Yellow Jackets return to action quickly in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, which begins Sunday at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga. Tech will be joined in the 16-team field by Alabama, Baylor, Duke, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Pacific, South Carolina, Southern California, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and Washington State. Three Tech players are ranked among the top 20 players in the nation -James White (10), John-Tyler Griffin (11) and Kyle Scott (17). Follow Tech golf @GT_Golf.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field squads will begin their 2011 outdoor season hosting the Georgia Intercollegiate Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. The majority of the events will take part on Friday as the meet kicks off at 9 am with the hammer throw. The running events will start at 2 p.m.
