THE FLATS – Saturday’s Heroes Day game between No. 15 Georgia Tech and former SEC rival Tulane will kick at 3:30 p.m. ET. HEROES DAY RECOGNITION
Saturday is Georgia Tech’s Heroes Day game. Below is a list of some of the activities planned:
- Emergency and military vehicles on during during Wreckfest
- Soliders from nearby bases will hold the American flag on the field during the National Anthem
- GT’s grounds crew pained red, white and blue ribbons on the field for the game
- In-game recognition for Charles Douglas, a GT grad who fought in the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star
- In-game recognition for Veteran Letterwinners, including the anniversary of Shelton B. Sutton Jr. who served in the Navy and has a ship named after him
GEICO ALUMNI ATHLETE OF THE GAME
2014 All-American Shaq Mason is Saturday’s Geico Alumni Athlete of the Game. Mason started all 14 guards during Georgia Tech’s 2014 Capital One Orange Bowl championship season. He anchored an offensive line that blocked for Tech’s Orange Bowl-record 452 rushing yards vs. Mississippi State and was part of the O-line that allowed just 0.79 sacks per game (1st in ACC, 2nd nationally). He was drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft. He saw significant playing time in the Patriots’ Thursday night win over Pittsburgh.
HONORARY CAPTAIN: TONY DAYKIN
Daykin was a three-year letterwinner at Georgia Tech from 1974-76 and was team captain as a senior in 1976. He played in the NFL for seven seasons with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelor’s in industrial engineering and later earned his MBA from Kennesaw State. After retiring from football, he was a McDonald’s franchisee for 21 years. He currently is teaching and coaching at Kell High School in Marietta.
