TROY, Ala. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis players Jaime Wong and Catherine Gunn each turned in stellar first day’s of play at the ITA South Regional, recording a pair of wins in Troy, Ala.
Wong opened the day with two solid wins, as she first disposed of Natalie Mikalich in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Wong then advanced to the third round with a victory over Mariana Melo in impressive fashion, winning in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
In the other half of the bracket Gunn was solid on the day, also reaching the round of 16. In the first match of the day, she defeated Kalerina Palenikova in three sets, rallying after dropping the first set by a 6-1 score, to win the next two sets by counts of 6-2 and 6-4. Gunn then needed three sets to dispose of Isabel Rosenbrock, winning the first set 6-3, before dropping the second by a 6-4 score and winning the third in solid 6-1 fashion.
Tech’s other singles competitors were unable to advance past the first round, as junior Sekita Grant dropped her opening match to Melissa Applebaum by a 6-0, 6-0 score, while senior Mysti Morris was defeated by second-seeded Jolie Rotondi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
