Jenny Sims finished fourth overall (13:29.56) at the Mercer Atlanta Cross Country Meet to lead the women to a first place finish at the 17-team event. The women had a total of 35 points to finish ahead of Kennesaw State University (39 points).
Sophomore Elena Linn was close behind, finishing sixth with a time of 13:32.40 while Nisha Kurian placed eighth (13:38.48) and Mary Chind came in ninth to round out the top ten. Tech had nine women place in the top twenty overall as Ann Armsby (13th), Emily Yandle (15th), Ashley Keck (16th), Catherine Spoth (17th), and Misty Dirken (18th) all finished within 17 seconds of each other. Maria Hampton, Theresa Mahfood, and Natalie Darraugh helped round out a solid performance by the Tech women in their first meet of the season.
On the men’s side, junior Paul Specht made his cross country debut for the Jackets by finishing fourth with a time of 17:09.00 to lead the men to a second place finish with 44 points, just behind Kennesaw State who had 23 points. Also placing in the top ten for Tech were sophomore Nazar Trilisky (17:10.96) and freshman James Taylor (17:25.27), sixth and tenth respectively, while senior Adam Jones finished 11th with a time of 17:28.09. Georgia Tech’s freshmen had a great showing as Casey Gramling (13th), Matt Kinsel (15th), and Greg Johnson (17th) all placed in the top twenty.
The Jackets will be back in action on September 17th to compete in the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
