CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Matt Figh led off the 800-yard freestyle relay with a split 200 free time of 1:37.70 to tie the school record in the 200 to pace the Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving team at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Virginia’s Aquatic and Fitness Center tonight. Tech is in fifth place after the first day of competition with 56 points. Florida State and Virginia lead the meet with 72 points.
The 800 free relay team of Figh, Brian Huff, Itai Eden and Jason Howard finished the event in fourth place with a season-best time of 6:37.93, just missing a NCAA ‘B’ cut time (6:37.66).
The 400 medley relay team of Jeremy Raines, Alex Williams, Teemu Kettunen and Ryan Riebesell finished in sixth place with a season-best time of 1:31.04.
Florida State’s Chris Vythoulkas, Wickus Nienaber, Michael Averett and Michael Paulus won the 200 medley relay with a NCAA ‘B’ but time of 1:28.95. Virginia’s 800 free relay team of Luke Wagner, Stefan Hirniak, Adam Kerpelman and Ian Prichard captured the first event of the evening with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 6:29.59.
The ACC Championships will continue Thursday, Feb. 26, beginning with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and concluding with finals at 7 p.m.
