Georgia Tech freshman Jonathan Dwyer, who rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries Saturday in the Yellow Jackets’ 69-14 win over Samford, was named ACC Rookie of the Week the league office announced today.
Dwyer’s rushing total was the fifth-largest single game mark ever for a Georgia Tech freshman and the fourth-most ever by a true freshman in school history.
Dwyer, a Marietta (Ga.) native, combined with senior Tashard Choice (110 yards rushing) to give the Yellow Jackets two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since 2003.
Other ACC honorees announced today: Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper (Offensive Back of the Week), Virginia tight end Tom Santi (Offensive Lineman of the Week), Boston College middle linebacker John Dunbar (Defensive Lineman of the Week), North Carolina linebacker Durrell Mapp (Defensive Back of the Week), and North Carolina’s Brandon Tate (Specialist of the Week).
Georgia Tech kicker Travis Bell, who connected on both field goal attempts and booted eight extra points, was vying to earn Specialist of the Week for the second straight week.
