Tech’s Johnson Named to Hampshire Honor Society

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech offensive lineman Ryan Johnson (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) was named to the National Football Foundation’s 2021 Hampshire Honor Society on Wednesday. The Hampshire Honor Society recognizes college football’s top senior scholar-athletes each year.

To be considered for inclusion in the Hampshire Honor Society, a student-athlete must have:

  • completed their final year of eligibility (or graduated and declared their intention to not use their remaining eligibility);
  • achieved a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout the entire course of their undergraduate study;
  • met all NCAA- or NAIA-mandated progress towards degree requirements; and
  • been starters or significant contributors.

Johnson, who played in 58 games and made 41 starts over five seasons at Tennessee (2017-19) and Georgia Tech (2020-21), earned three prestigious degrees in five-and-a-half years. He completed coursework for a B.S. in civil engineering from Tennessee in just two-and-a-half years (3.86 grade point average), needed just one year to earn a M.S. in structural engineering from Tennessee (3.7 GPA) and graduated from Georgia Tech in just one-and-a-half years with a M.S. in analytics (3.66 GPA). He was a four-year member of the Southeastern Conference academic honor roll at Tennessee and a two-time selection for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s all-academic team at Georgia Tech.

On the field, Johnson made starts at four different positions (center, right guard, left guard and right tackle) and saw playing time at six different positions (all five offensive line positions plus tight end) during the course of his collegiate playing career. He started all 22 games during his two seasons at Georgia Tech (20 at right guard, two at right tackle) and served as a Yellow Jackets’ game captain eight times.

Johnson is one of several Yellow Jackets that could hear their names called during the 2022 National Football League Draft, which will be held April 28-30 in Las Vegas.
