BISHOP, Ga. – In the first race of the 2011 cross country season, the Georgia Tech men’s cross country team netted a second place performance while the women took fifth at the UGA Invitational at the UGA Equestrian Center. DJ McMiillan led the way for the men while Mary Kownackpaced the women.

McMillan finished sixth overall in the 8k race with a time of 25:15.74 as the rest of the Jacket pack crossed the line right behind him. Patrick Barron took 10th place with a time of 25:31.17, Shawn Roberts came in 14th with a 25:58.20 finish, Joe Fulton crossed the line 22nd in 26:15.20 and Obiandu Igwefinished with a time of 26:30.97.

Eric Powers (35th, 26:45.22), Doug Black (41st, 27:18.47), Cameron Reid (47th, 27:34.09), Niall Longobardi (54th, 27:43.97) and Alec Clifford(59th, 27:50.66) rounded out the pack of Jacket runners that averaged a time of 25:54.26 during the race.

Georgia earned the victory for both the men and the women. On the men’s side the Bulldogs crossed 2nd-9th place tallying just 21 points while averaging a time of 25:07.30. The Lady Bulldogs tallied just 19 points at the meet averaging a 17:57.66 5k time during the race while finishing 1-2-3-4.

The Yellow Jacket Women were led by Kownack who finished with a time of 19:31.00 in 35th place. The senior was followed by Megan Breitbach who crossed in 39th place with a time of 19:33.69, then newcomer Kelly Meyer who finished 42nd with a time of 19:37.64. Diana Pressel(46th, 19:55.94) and Rachel Hammond (47th, 19:58.96) rounded out the scorers.

The final four Jackets to finish included Laura Nelson (49th, 20:06.14), Morgan Jackson (54th, 20:28.44), Elizabeth Lacksen (55th, 20:28.78) and Lauren Young(59th, 20:45.28). Tech averaged a time of 19:43.45 during the race.

Tech returns to action in a couple of weeks at the Clemson Invitational on September 16. The women will begin things at 6:15 p.m. followed by the men, who will compete at 6:45 p.m.
