MOBILE, ALA – The 18th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable to build on its momentum after winning the doubles point and dropped a 4-3 decision to 27th-ranked South Alabama in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) got started in strong fashion, winning the day’s first two doubles matches against the Jaguars (2-1), but were only able to win a pair of singles matches. Senior Jaime Wong and freshman Kelly Anderson defeated USA’s Viktoria Stoklasova and Katarina Palenikova by an 8-6 score at No. 1 doubles and Tech’s team of Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto defeated the Jaguars’ Andrea Kurekova and Dominica Nemcovicova at No. 2 by an 8-6 count.
In singles play, Tech’s Jaime Wong continued her outstanding play in the spring, downing Andrea Kurekova at No. 1 singles in straight sets by a 7-6, 6-1 score. Anderson remained perfect in her career as a Yellow Jacket, winning her second straight singles match of the spring. Anderson disposed of South Alabama’s Marlieke Jager in straight sets, winning the first set by a 6-4 score before winning the second by a 6-1 count.
Georgia Tech will return to action on Sunday, when it remains on the road to face 32nd-ranked Auburn in a match that will get under way at 1 p.m.
