Tech Women's Tennis Downs Georgia State, 5-2

Feb. 23, 2004

ATLANTA – Lindsey Stauss won her match in the No. 4 singles slot to secure the match and help Georgia Tech (4-2) a 5-2 win over cross-town rival Georgia State (3-3) Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center outdoor courts.

Stauss was one of five players to record singles victories for the Yellow Jackets on the afternoon, as she downed State’s Ania Dolinska, 6-1, 6-0. Also recording straight-set wins for the Yellow Jackets were No. 99 Kelly Anderson at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0 over Simona Foltyn and Maria Nieto in the No. 5 position, as she defeated Rebecca Mitchell by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Sekita Grant recorded the Jackets’ first victory on the day, as her opponent, Karmelina Rivera, retired with Grant up 3-2 in the first set. Scoring the fifth and final point on the afternoon was Tech’s Lyndsay Shosho at the top of the lineup. After dropping the first set, 5-7, to State’s Annamaria Forgacs, Shosho came back to take the second 6-4. The two women then played a tie-breaker third set, with Shosho coming out on top, 11-9.

“I think we showed our grit a little bit today,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton, “coming back after losing the doubles point to take the match. We really didn’t play our best today, but to the girls’ credit, they just fought hard and hung in there, and it really turned the match around quickly in singles’ play.”

Georgia Tech will return to action next weekend when it travels to California to take on San Diego State and Pepperdine, with the SDSU match beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
