Knoxville, Tenn. – Led by singles victories by Mysti Morris, Sekita Grant and Maria Nieto, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis bounced back on the second day of play at the St. Mary’s Tennis Classic in Knoxville, Tenn.
Morris was the first singles winners of the day as she advanced to the finals of the consolation draw of singles flight one with a straight-set victory. Morris rolled past Kentucky’s Kacie Anson in strong style by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. She will face NC State’s Myrna Bawono in the fifth-place match on Sunday morning.
Grant followed Morris in the singles flight two draw, advancing to the consolation final with her own straight-set victory. Grant took the first set from Mississippi State’s Magdolna Rekasi by a 6-0 count, before holding on for a 7-6 (6) win in the second set. She will take on Kentucky’s Shannon Stough in the fifth-place match on Sunday.
Nieto was victorious in the flight five consolation draw, defeating Mississippi State’s Justyna Switala in straight sets by matching 6-4 scores. Nieto will face Purdue’s Missy Wright in the consolation final.
In other singles action, freshman Annelies Schenk dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to North Carolina’s Kendrick Bunn in the flight four draw and will face Purdue’s Laura Burgerello in the third-place match. Also in flight four, rookie Lyndsay Shosho fell to Tennessee’s Ashley Robards in the consolation draw in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
In doubles play, Tech’s team of Nieto and Shosho fell to Maryland’s Dent and Chavades in a tight 9-8 (4) match in the flight two consolation draw.
The St. Mary’s Classic will conclude on Sunday with the finals of singles play.
