Tech Women's Cross County Places Third, Men Finish Sixth at Chattanooga Opener

Sept. 7, 2001

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — In the first action of the 2001 season, Georgia Tech’s women’s cross country team finished third, while the men’s squad claimed sixth place, in the seven-team Chattanooga Opener, held Friday at Moccasin Bend.

The Yellow Jacket women were paced by freshman Katie de Vaux, who covered the two-mile course in 12:24 to finish ninth. She was followed closely by sophomores Betsy Bulat, who finished 11th, and Neta Ezer, who claimed 12th place. Bulat ran 12:26, followed by Ezer at 12:28.

Closing out the scoring for Tech was sophomore Christine Noelke (20th, 12:44) and freshman Kirsten Shell (24th, 13:01).

On the men’s side the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Barton Crist, who placed 27th in the team scoring, finishing the five-kilometer course in 17:20. Following Crist were sophomores Daniel Moss (29th, 17:27) and Matt Wesseling (32nd, 17:42).

Senior Jared McGehee (33rd,17:50) and junior Ashton Manley (35th, 18:04) also counted in the scoring for Tech.

Tech head coach Alan Drosky chose not to run several of his top competitors. The early-season meet gave many younger runners a chance to compete.

Auburn claimed both team titles, as well as the individual winner on both the men’s and women’s side.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Sept. 15 in the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta.
