Tech Women's Cross Country Takes 2nd at UTC Opener, Men Place 3rd

ATLANTA – Led by a seventh-place finish by freshman Kirby Cross, the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team opened its season by placing second in the UT-Chattanooga Opener in Moccasin Bend, Tennessee on Friday evening. Sophomore Rob Kuhn led the Jackets to a third place finish in the men’s race.

The Yellow Jacket women tallied 63 points, finishing behind Auburn, who had 25 points. The Tech men finished with 91 points, behind Auburn (36 points) and host UT-Chattanooga (62 points).

Cross had an impressive debut in her first collegiate race, placing seventh overall with a two-mile time of 12:03. Also posting top-20 finishes for the Jackets were freshmen Jenny Sims (14th) and Mary Chind (20th), sophomore Misty Dirksen (15th), and senior Jennifer Lentz (12th).

Shannon Wommack, running unattached, won the race with a time of 11:21, one second ahead of Auburn’s Angela Homan.

On the men’s side, sophomore Rob Kuhn and freshman Cristan Duvall placed 11th and 12th, respectively. Kuhn’s time of 16:02 in the five-kilometer race was just two seconds ahead of Duvall’s, who was competing in his first collegiate race. Senior Jimmy DeYonker finished 20th in the race, with a time of 16:25. Also figuring into the scoring for the Jackets were senior Barton Crist (25th) and freshman David Herren (31st).

Auburn’s Andrew Heath was the men’s winner, with a time of 15:28.

The Jackets will return to action September 13th at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston Salem, N.C.
