ATLANTA -The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams were unable to capitalize on a home course advantage Saturday, as both squads struggled at the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Championships at the Georgia Regional Hospital Cross Country Course. Tech’s women placed eighth with 214 points, while the men took ninth with 243 points.

Freshman Carly Matthews led the Yellow Jacket women with a 6K time of 22:39.6 to place 41st. Senior Amy Dock was close behind, finishing 42nd in 22:45.5. Junior Neta Ezer (45th), senior Eboni Crosby (46th) and freshman Carla Uribe (54th) also figured in the Jackets scoring total.

The Tech women were without the services of this season’s top runner Katie Griffin, who is nursing a stress fracture in her right heel, and 2001 NCAA runner-up Renee Metivier, who is redshirting this fall.

Senior Brendon Mahoney ran a very strong race for the Yellow Jacket men, placing 12th in an 8K time of 25:14.6. His finish is the best by a Tech individual on the men’s side since Kevin Graham placed third in 1994.

After Mahoney, freshman Rob Kuhn was the next Yellow Jacket to cross the finish line, taking 60th place. Seniors Joe Poliseo and Jimmy DeYonker placed 62nd and 63rd, respectively. Sophomore Gaben Moore rounded out the scoring for the Jackets, as he finished 65th.

With five of the race’s top six finishers, NC State won the men’s title for the seventh time in the last eight years. On the women’s side NC State and Wake Forest tied for top honors with 61 points. North Carolina junior Shalene Flanagan won her third consecutive women’s individual title in 20:06.03. NC State’s David Patterson won the men’s crown in 24:14.2.

The Jackets return to action Saturday, November 16 at the NCAA South Region Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
