CLEMSON, S.C. – The Georgia Tech women’s track and field team finished runner-up to host Clemson, 93-91.33 points, at the Clemson Invitational held in the new Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility tonight. The men’s track and field team scored 66 points to finish fifth out of nine teams.
Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was senior Kyle Rabbitt (Red Oak, Ga.) and freshman Ashlee Kidd (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Rabbit set a new Clemson indoor track record in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:17.49. Kidd tallied her second NCAA provisional time in the 400 meters with a new Clemson indoor track record time of 54.38.
Reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Week Montrell Person (Merriville, Ind.) broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional mark of 7.76 to capture the event for Tech. Junior Dana Rogers (East Point, Ga.) tallied a NCAA provisional mark in the same event with a personal-record time of 8.37. Sophomore Andriane Lapsley (San Antonio, Texas) finished sixth in the 60mH with a personal-best time of 8.69.
Person and Lapsley also tallied top-eight finishes for the Jackets in the 60-meter dash, finishing fifth (6.87) and sixth (7.65), respectively. Senior Amandi Rhett (Willingboro, N.J.) tied a season-best time of 7.46 to finish second in the event. Rhett tallied a second top-eight finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.76.
Pacing the Rambling Wreck in the 800 meters was senior captain Brendon Mahoney (Cumming, Ga.) and freshman Jennifer Sims (Woodstock, Ga.). Mahoney posted a time of 1:52.45 to finish third in the 800m, while Sims finished fourth with a time of 2:14.13.
Three Tech competitors finished in the top eight in the mile run for the Jackets. Senior Jennifer Lentz (Brevard, N.C.) led the way with a sixth-place finish with a time of 5:08.39. Junior Neil McDonagh (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied a seventh-place finish with a time of 4:22.84, while freshman Kirby Cross (Rome, Ga.) finished the race in eighth place with a time of 5:12.70.
Headlining the field events for Tech was All-American sophomore Chaunte Howard (Riverside, Calif.). Howard won the high jump for the third straight time this indoor season with a mark of 1.78 meters. Howard posted a mark of 5.93 meters in the long jump for the Jackets to finish in second place.
Senior Michael Massey (Asheboro, N.C.) captured the high jump event for the third consecutive time this season with a NCAA provisional mark of 2.17 meters. Sophomore I-Perfection Harris (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a mark of 7.45 meters in the long jump to finish in second place for the Rambling Wreck. Junior transfer Mike McPherson (Mebane, N.C.) also tallied a top-eight finish in the long jump for Tech with a mark of 7.14 meters.
Scoring points for the Yellow Jackets in the triple jump was junior Shanta Smith (Miami, Fla.), sophomore Brandy Depland (Katy, Texas) and senior Spencer Irvine (Lake Forest, Ill.). Smith tallied a NCAA provisional mark of 12.95 meters to finish second in the event. Depland finished fourth with a mark of 12.47 meters, while Irvine had a jump of 14.22 meters to finish sixth.
The men’s Distance Medley Relay team of Barton Crist (Lilburn, Ga.), Brandon Duckett (Baltimore, Md.), Cristan Duvall (Duluth, Ga.) and David Herren (Rome, Ga.) posted a NCAA provisional time of 10:22.36 to finish fifth for the Yellow Jackets.
Tech will return to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson Pentathlon on Friday, Jan. 30.
