Tech Women Second, Men Third at Great American Cross Country Festival

Oct. 3, 2009

CARY, N.C. – Sophomore Mary Kate DuBard’s second-place run propelled the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team to second at the Great American Cross Country Festival Friday in Cary, N.C. The Tech men placed third at the WakeMed Soccer Park.

“Both teams ran very solid races today and we’re happy with their efforts,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “There is definitely some good momentum and we’re a much improved team from just four weeks ago. But we’re still not where we want to be. We’ve got four weeks to go before the ACC’s and we’ll work hard to keep making progress.”

The Jacket women finished with 66 points as four runners placed in the top 20. Led by DuBard’s 18:03 pace, freshman Kate Borowicz (18:30) and Annie Martin (18:47) followed suit in 10th and 15th, respectively.

Rounding out the scoring for the women was sophomore Betsy Kim (18:56) in 18th and senior Veronica Kinard (19:05) in 21st-place.

The men posted their highest finish of the 2009 season as well, finishing third with 78 points.

The Jackets had an outstanding run as all five point scorers finished in the top 20. Junior D.J. McMillan paced the men for the second straight meet, coming in ninth with a time of 24:55. He was followed by senior Billy Mateker (25:14) in 15th, and senior Matt Hickey (25:15) in 16th.

Right behind in 19th and 20th, was freshman Patrick Barron (25:21) sophomore Philip O’Brien (25:24).

Maryland placed first on the women’s side with 23 points, while Duke took the men’s title with 41.

Both teams will return to action on Oct. 17 at the Pre-NCAA meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
