ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis team hosts No. 75 Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center outdoor courts. The 30th-ranked Yellow Jackets enter the match with a 2-2 record this spring while the Tigers stand at 3-1.
“Auburn is a great team, as they return almost every player from last year’s squad so they have some experience,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We’ve always had tough battles against them, so tomorrow we’re certainly going to have to be on our game.”
Tech looks to rebound from a 4-3 loss to 68th-ranked Iowa over the weekend. The Jackets captured the doubles point, but then dropped singles matches at the Nos. 1-4 positions before earning a three-set victory at No. 5 and a default win at the final position. The Tigers are coming off a 4-3 loss as well, suffered at the hands of South Florida Monday.
“This is a match that we have to rebound with,” said Shelton. “We need to look at this as an opportunity to erase last week’s loss and put something positive in so that we can gain some momentum going into this weekend’s match against Georgia State and then our matches in California the following weekend.”
Senior Maria Nieto leads the Jackets with a 4-0 singles record this dual-match season, and she is followed by freshman Lindsey Stauss and senior Sekita Grant, with three wins apiece. On the doubles side, Stauss stands at 4-0 this dual-match season while freshman Alison Silverio owns a 3-0 record. Also recording three doubles victories this spring are Nieto and sophomore partner Lyndsay Shosho.
“We’ve got a young team and I think that it’s important that we have a good match tomorrow so that it feels like it’s going to be a great season,” said Shelton.
Following the match against Auburn, the Jackets will host Georgia State Sunday at 12 p.m.
