Tech Women Finish First; Men Place Fourth at UTC Invitational

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Georgia Tech women’s cross country team finished first, while the men’s team placed fourth at the UTC Invitational in the team’s season opener Friday evening at the Moccasin Bend race course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The women’s team, led by seniors Nisha Kurian and Jenny Sims, had seven members finish in the top 25. Kurian led all Tech runners by finishing the two-mile race in 11:12 and a second-place finish overall. Sims crossed the line just behind Kurian, also garnering an official time of 11:12.

Also finishing in the top 25 for the Jackets was seniors Elena Linn (9th) and Maria Hampton (21st) juniors Katina Zuganelis (16th) and Ashley Keck (24th) and sophomore Lindsay Pickens (23rd).

On the men’s side, David Herren led Tech with a fourth-place finish overall in the five kilometer race. Herren crossed the line with a time of 15:21. Tech transfer Iain Turnbull placed 14th in his first race as a Jacket in a time of 15:48.

Other top finishers for the men included senior Cristan Duvall, who placed 20th overall in a time of 16:01, junior E.C. Gibbs (21st) and sophomores Billy Mateker (22nd) and Matt Hickey (24th).

The Tech cross country teams will be back in action next Saturday, September 15, in two split squad meets. A few members from each team will attend the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., while the remaining student athletes will stay in Atlanta and compete at the Georgia State Invitational.
