ATLANTA – Mary Ashley “Mash” Tippins, a 2006 AVCA and PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Georgia Tech beginning this fall.
“When you have a player of Mary Ashley’s caliber join your program, it can instantly elevate the level of play of the team,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bond Shymansky. “She is a strong competitor, natural leader and gifted setter. She has grown up around the Yellow Jacket program and has a good understanding of how our offensive system works. We are confident that she will provide an immediate boost for our team and many years of future success.”
The 2006 Gatorade Player of the Year for Georgia and two-time AAAA Player of the Year as a standout setter at nearby Marist School, Tippins was a PrepVolleyball.com finalist for the top high school senior setter in the nation in 2006 after breaking the school record for career assists while leading her team to the 2006 AAAA Volleyball Championship.
Tippins is a two-time Atlanta Journal Constitution Player of the Year and was named first-team all-state, all-region and region MVP on three occasions. A 2006 AAU All-American, she was the setter for the A5 17 Erica team that placed third at the AAU National Championships and 23rd at the 2006 Junior Olympics.
Tippins is one of just two Georgians named to the 2006 AVCA High School All-America Team, with the other being defensive specialist Jordan McCullers, who enrolled at Georgia Tech in January.
