Tech Swimming to Host Clemson, WKU, Penn State

Nov. 3, 2011

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to the pool for two home meets this weekend at the GT Aquatic Center. On Friday night the Jackets will face off in a tri-meet with Clemson and Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. and will wrap up the weekend with an 11 a.m. dual meet with Penn State.

In Tech’s last outing, the Yellow Jackets dropped a set of dual meets to perennial powerhouses, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Tech men fell at home 170-122 while the women dropped the meet 187.5-110. On the road against South Carolina, The Men earned another 122 points but fell this time 176-122 while the women lost 179.5-116.

The Jackets and the Tigers have met 68 times in the history of both programs. Other than Georgia, Clemson is the most frequently seen opponent for the Georgia Tech swim team and on the men’s side the Tigers hold the 38-30 series advantage including a victory last year in Clemson, S.C. The women’s team has gone against the Tigers every year since the inception of its program in 2002 and the Tigers have won all but one of those meetings (9-1). Entering the meet, Clemson has beat the likes of Davidson, Limestone and SCAD while falling to South Carolina. The women’s team also earned a win over Georgia Southern.

The Tech men have met up with Western Kentucky 16 times in the past and the Hilltoppers hold the 11-5 series advantage. The women’s teams currently sit deadlocked at a 2-2-1 series record. In the 2011-12 season, the Western Kentucky men have seen action just once falling 159-141 to Kentucky. The women’s team is 1-1 on the year with a 240-54 win over Vanderbilt and a 162-138 loss to the Wildcats.

This will be the first time that either squad has met Penn State in the pool. The Nittany Lions have had just one meet entering this dual with the Jackets, a home meet with West Virginia which both squads easily won. Before their Saturday morning at Tech, Penn State will take on swim powerhouse Auburn in Auburn.
