Tech Softball Posts Seventh Straight Win in Sweep of St. Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – The Georgia Tech softball team (15-4, 0-0 ACC) swept a doubleheader from St. Mary’s College Wednesday, improving its winning streak to seven games. Tech took game one, 5-1, and won the second contest, 3-0.

In game one, the Jackets got on the board in the top of the second. With one out, right fielder Soraya Reddick singled, stole second and advanced to third on a single by first baseman Katie Donovan. As Donovan stole second, Reddick took off on the throw and scored, making the score, 1-0.

Tech kept its momentum in the third, as left fielder Tara Neff led off with a single. She swiped second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Felicia Coursey. Neff scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jamie Frost. Back-to-back doubles by shortstop Tara Knudsen and catcher Lindsay Wood gave the Jackets a 3-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, designated player Jessica Sallinger doubled to right field. Kirin Kumar then entered to pinch run and moved over to third on a single by center fielder Sara Wissmann. Kumar scored on a sacrifice fly by Neff, and Wissmann was plated by Coursey, who doubled to give Tech a 5-0 lead.

The Gaels got on the board in the sixth, as catcher Laura Davis drew a bases-loaded walk, which made the score 5-1.

Offensively, the Jackets were led by Knudsen, who had two hits. Each starter had at least one hit for Tech.

Starter Tiffany Goodman went 6.1 innings allowing just four hits, while striking out four Gaels. She improves to 3-0 on the season with the win.

In game two, sophomore Erin Voeltz and Sallinger combined on a three-hit shutout, as Tech posted a 3-0 win.

The game was scoreless until the Jackets put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Neff singled and stole second. Second baseman Katie Donovan walked, and Wood singled to score Neff. After Wood swiped second, Frost beat out an infield single, which scored both Donovan and Wood, giving Tech a 3-0 lead.

Starter Erin Voeltz (5-2) went five innings, allowing just three hits and fanning two, to earn her fifth win of the season. Sallinger went the final two innings to earn her first save.

Tech returns to action Friday at San Jose State’s National Invitational Softball Tournament. The Jackets face No. 17 Iowa, Syracuse and UNC Greensboro. Bracket play starts on Saturday.
