THE FLATS – Liz Galarza and John Higinbotham led both Georgia Tech cross country teams to impressive third-place finishes on Friday at the North Alabama Showcase.
Galarza placed fourth out of 384 runners in the women’s 5K race with a personal-best time of 16:38.96. In a race of more than 300 runners, Higinbotham finished 10th with a career-best time of 24:00.86 in the men’s 8K.
Helena Lindsay also finished in the top 10 for the women, running a personal-best time of 16:49.08. James Cragin was the second Yellow Jacket to cross the finish line in the men’s race and claimed 15th place overall (24:04.7, PB).
Four runners from Tech finished in the top 30 of their respective races. Kate Jortberg finished 26th for the women and ran a career-best time of 17:26.9. On the men’s side, Devin Wade came in 25th place (24:14.86, PB), Nick Nyman finished in 29th place with a personal-best time of 24:18.59 and Joshua Williams finished in 30th place (24:19.51, PB).
The men and women defeated several well-known programs, including Auburn, Eastern Kentucky and Tech’s in-state rival Georgia.

The Yellow Jackets will head to the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Friday, Sept. 30. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
