Tech Picks Up 4-3 Win Over Winthrop

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech notched its first dual match win of the season on Saturday morning, downing Winthrop, 4-3, at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The Yellow Jackets (1-3) grabbed the doubles point and three singles wins to secure the victory.

DOUBLES ACTION: Georgia Tech claimed the early match lead pocketing two doubles victories to go up, 1-0. The Yellow Jacket duo of Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen grabbed their second dual match win of the season, defeating Winthrop’s Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns, 6-4. The doubles point was clinched from court two where Tech’s No. 39 duo of Valeriya Deminova and Victoria Flores upended Alisa Soloveva/Rafaela Santos, 6-3, to push the Jackets in the lead, 1-0.

SINGLES ACTION: Otsuka made quick work of Megan Kauffman on court three to open singles play, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 victory to give the Jackets a 2-0 match lead. Winthrop recorded their first win on court two before Cohen gave Tech a 3-1 advantage with a three-set win on court five. The freshman raced to a 6-2 first set win, but dropped the second set before rebounding in the third, 6-4, to claim the win over Van Eck. Deminova clinched the match for Georgia Tech from court four. The Jacket pocketed the first set over Rafaela Santos, 6-3, and clinched the win in a second set tiebreak, 7-6 (4), to give Tech its first dual win of the season. Winthrop took the final two matches on courts one and six for the 4-3 tally.
