Tech Netters Well Represented on ACC Academic Honor Roll List

Aug. 5, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Men’s tennis sophomores Guillermo Gomez, Doug Kenny and Ryan Smith, along with Freshman Kevin King join a list of 175 Georgia Tech student-athletes named to the 2008-09 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.

“We ask a lot both academically and athletically from each of our team members,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “It is well deserved when they receive an award like this. Attaining these high GPA’s at Georgia Tech is not a small accomplishment, and shows the high level of student-athletes we have the pleasure of coaching!”

Gomez, King and Smith were also named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Tennis Team just two days ago.

The Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes that participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.00 or better for the full academic year. This year saw a record 2,772 student-athletes honored for their hard work in the classroom.

Duke led the conference in total selections with 418. Boston College followed with 392. North Carolina was third with 276 honorees, while Maryland was fourth with 271. Virginia saw 224 student-athletes earn spots on the list, followed by Clemson (209), Virginia Tech (190), NC State (178), Georgia Tech (175), Florida State (165), Wake Forest (146) and Miami (128).
