Tech Men's Tennis Upset by Virginia, 5-2

March 15, 2003

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to build on the momentum gained from winning the doubles point and dropped a 5-2 decision to Virginia at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va. The loss snapped the Yellow Jackets’ six-match unbeaten streak.

The Jackets (8-3, 1-1 ACC) looked to have early control in the match-up with the Cavaliers (13-2, 1-0 ACC) as Tech took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches to start the day. The Yellow Jackets’ No. 1 duo of Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg were 9-7 winners over 33rd-ranked Michael Duquette and Doug Stewart. Tech’s tandem of West Nott and Trevor McLeod clinched the doubles point with their win at No. 3 over Rylan Rizza and Meythaler by an 8-4 count.

The Yellow Jackets then struggled in singles play, winning just one match and only two sets in the other five matches in the afternoon. Junior West Nott was Tech’s lone victor, as he defeated Stephen Rozek at No. 5 singles in straight sets. Nott won the first set by a 6-2 score and then held on to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6.

Fellow juniors Scott Schnugg and Jason Pieters were the other two Yellow Jacket players to win a set on the day. Schnugg fell to Rizza at No. 2 singles by a 1-6, 6-3, 3-6 score, and Pieters was defeated by Duquette at No. 3 singles in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 8-10.

Georgia Tech will look to get back on track on Sunday when it travels to face Maryland in a match that will begin at 11 a.m. in College Park, Md.
