ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will open its 2007-08 season at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship this Friday-Monday, Sept. 21-24, hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
“The Southern Intercollegiate is a great indicator to see where our kids are,” Head Coach Kenny Thorne said. “We will see a lot of top players at this event, which always features some of the best competition in the country. This will give our guys an opportunity to show everyone what they are about.”
David North, a senior from Durban, South Africa, leads a group of five returnees from a squad that earned an NCAA Tournament bid and a final 2006 ranking of No. 47. Also back for the Jackets in 2007 are seniors Jose Muguruza, Scott Blackmon and George Gvelesiani and sophomore Austin Roebuck.
This tournament will also mark the collegiate debut for five newcomers to the Jackets roster. Guillermo Gomez, one of the top junior players out of Spain, headlines a strong freshman class, which also features Eliot Potvin, Ryan Smith, Miguel Muguruza and Doug Kenny.
“This will be a tough first competition for the freshman,” Thorne added. “Once they settle in, they could all have a great showing. These are five of the hardest working freshman we have ever had in one class.”
Results for all matches will be posted on RamblinWreck.com following the conclusion of doubles and singles each day.
