Atlanta – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (5-10, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) earned it’s lone point with a win from Junior Scott Blackmon, playing in the sixth singles spot, but fell, 6-1, to No. 17 Duke at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Blue Devils (8-6, 1-1 ACC) were on the board first after sweeping doubles taking a 1-0 lead. The eighth-ranked Duke tandem of David Goulet and Joey Atas downed Tech’s George Gvelesiani and Eric Molnar, 9-7, while Tech’s Jose Muguruza and Blackmon were defeated by Alex Stone and Dylan Arnould, 8-4. Jordan Delass and Luke Rassow-Kantor, playing in the third doubles spot, fell to Kiril Dimitrov and Peter Rodrigues, 8-6.
In singles play, Molnar fell to Rodrigues, ranked 73rd in the nation, in the two spot, 6-1, 6-3, giving Duke a 2-0 lead. Zach Rath followed with a straight-set loss to Arnould in the fifth singles spot. Freshman Rassow-Kantor lost to Goulet, 6-3, 7-5, improving Duke’s lead to 4-0. Blackmon put the Jackets on the board with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Aaron Carpenter in the sixth singles spot.
After a hard-fought battle with Duke’s Atas, ranked 72nd, Jose Muguruza dropped a 7-6, 6-4 decision in the No. 1 singles spot. Dimitrov, the No. 43 player in the country, closed the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over DeLass.
With the loss, Tech slips to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in ACC play.
The Jackets return to action Friday, March 30 in Blacksburg, Va. where they will face No. 35 Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech’s next home match is on Friday, April 6 at 2 p.m. against No. 21 NC State.
