WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to build on its momentum from the first day and was only able to advance Scott Schnugg to the quarterfinals of singles play before he was eliminated from the ACC Indoor Championships at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Schugg was one of only two Yellow Jackets to pick up a victory on day two of the tournament. The junior opened the day by defeating third-seeded Alex Herrera of Florida State in three sets. Schnugg dropped the opening set by a 6-3 score, but then rallied to win the match by matching 6-3, 6-3 scores in the second and third sets. He then faced second-seeded Ludovic Walter of Duke in the quarterfinals, losing the match in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-4 score.
Tech’s only other singles winner of the day was rookie Trevor McLeod, who won his opening match in the consolation draw against Brian Murphy of Wake Forest. McLeod was leading in the first set by a 5-4 score when Murphy retired with an injury. In the next round, McLeod faced Darrin Cohen of Virginia and lost a tight straight-set match by scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (5).
Georgia Tech will return to action on Jan. 25, when it opens its dual match season with a pair of matches, facing Troy State at 9 a.m. and Mercer at 3 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the Tech campus.
