RALEIGH – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team continued its solid play of late recording a 4-0 victory over Florida State in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Raleigh, N.C. The event is being contested at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets (14-9) opened the match by taking a pair of doubles matches and the doubles point from the Seminoles (12-10). Tech’s duo of Roger Anderson and David Wright got Tech going at the No. 1 spot with a win over FSU’s Xavier Luscan and Jeff Scarella by an 8-4 score. The Jackets’ tandem of West Nott and Scott Schnugg kept things going for Tech by picking up a win at No. 2 over the ‘Noles’ Jarrod Owen and Mat Cloer, cruising to the 8-3 decision.
In singles action, Tech junior Roger Anderson avenged an earlier loss to Xavier Luscan at No. 1, as he rolled to a straight-set win on Friday. Anderson lost only four games in the match, en route to the 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Jackets’ second singles winner of the day was sophomore Scott Schnugg, who was a winner at No. 4 over Gustav Bucht. Schnugg captured the first set by a 6-1 score and then was a winner in a second-set tiebreaker to claim the victory.
The Yellow Jackets closed out the match at No. 5 singles as sophomore West Nott defeated Chip Webb in straight sets, winning a tiebreaker in the first set and then closing out the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. The remaining three matches were halted once Tech had claimed the 4-0 lead.
Tech will next face top-seeded and 14th-ranked Duke in the semifinals in a match that will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Full tournament results are available at www.theacc.com
