ATLANTA – For their first meet of the 2010-11 indoor season the men’s and women’s track teams will head up Interstate 85 to Clemson University where they will compete in the Orange and Purple Winter Classic on Saturday, December 4.

The day will begin with the shot put at 11 a.m. while the running events will kick off with the 800-meter run at 12:30 p.m. The field events to take place on the day include the shot put, weight throw, long jump, pole vault and high jump. After the 800-meter run, the other running events will include the 60-meter high hurdle and 60-meter dash prelims and finals, 500-meter dash, 300-meter dash, the mile and the day will conclude with the 4x400m relay.

“We are looking forward to heading to Clemson this Saturday to compete in the Orange and Purple Winter Classic,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Fall training has gone exceptionally well. This meet will give us a good indication of where we are and what we will need to accomplish in training over the Christmas break.”

The men’s team will be represented by 16 athletes competing in eight different events. In the field events, Mykhail Chambers will represent Tech in the high jump while Duncan Thompson takes on weight throw duties. Jonathan Gardner and Omar Morrison will take over long jump duties.

On the track, Joe DiDia, Perron Jones and Michael Simms will do double duty racing in both the 60m and 300m dash while the trio of Hunter Clasen, Jay Oatts and Subbu Sivanesan will run in the 500m dash. The 800m will by run by Ryan Gomba, Cameron Reid and Joe Stowe while Joe Fulton, Matt Hickey and Nick McNutt will compete in the mile, the lone distance race on the day.

“We’re excited about heading up to Clemson for our first meet of the season,” said head women’s coach Alan Drosky. “This is our only competition before the holiday break so it’s a good chance to see where everyone is and it’s a good opportunity to see some of our new people in action for the first time wearing our uniform. The facility is good and the competition will be equally good, but mostly we’re just looking to see how we’re progressing. Still, we’ve got some talented young women who are anxious to compete, so I expect we’ll some really good performances.”

Sixteen female athletes will also be at the meet competing in 11 different events. On the field side, Kayla McKeirnan will partake in the high jump as well as the shot put. Monique Pate will join her in the throwing event. Pole vaulters Erica Penk and Joanne Wright will be in action along with long jumper Julienne McKee.

On the track side of things, the sprint group will consist of Jhanelle McLeod and Melanie Akwule who will participate in the 60m dash and Jenae Anderson and Taylor Davidson who will take part in the 300m dash. The middistance group of Kellie Christian, Jasmine Isley and Briana Richardson will run in the 500m while Leslie Njoku will represent the Jackets in the 800m run.

Katie Gezon, Jade Sims and Hillary Davis will participate in the one mile run and hurdlers Akwule, McKeirnan and Pate will take part in the 60m HH. Isley, Anderson, Njoku and Christian will come together in the 4x400m relay to finish off the meet.
