The Georgia Tech football program has been honored by the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) for graduating 70 percent or more of its freshman class of 1997-98.
Georgia Tech is one of 32 Division I-A institutions honored by the AFCA.
Other Atlantic Coast Conference school honored include Duke, which will receive the AFCA’s 2003 Academic Achievement Award after recording a 100 percent graduation rate, as well as Virginia and Wake Forest, which were also at 70 percent or better.
Others receiving honorable mention with a rate of 70 percent or better: Ball State, Baylor, Boston College, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Illinois, Marshall, Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Purdue, Rice, South Carolina, Southern Methodist, Southern Mississippi, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Washington, West Virginia and Western Michigan.
The overall graduation rate of the 102 I-A schools that responded was 59 percent
The study involves the freshman class from the academic year of 1997-98, including those who entered at that time but who did not receive financial aid until after their initial year, or who transferred from another institution and subsequently received a grant-in-aid.
