ATLANTA– – Making its second College World Series appearance and first since 1994, Georgia Tech (51-14) will play the first game of the eight-team tournament, facing South Carolina (53-16) Friday at 2 p.m. Eastern. The game at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
The eight-team CWS field is divided into two, four-team double-elimination brackets with the bracket winners meeting for the national title on Saturday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Georgia Tech’s second game of the CWS will be on Sunday, June 16. The winner of the Tech-South Carolina game plays the winner of the Nebraska-Clemson game on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). The losers play an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (ESPN).
The Yellow Jackets reached the College World Series by sweeping the NCAA Atlanta Super Regional with a pair of wins over Florida Atlantic, 14-3 and 11-5. South Carolina defeated Miami, 6-4, in the third and deciding game of the NCAA Columbia Super Regional.
Tech is in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in the last 18 years but has not been to Omaha since 1994, when a Yellow Jacket squad that featured future major leaguers Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek, Jay Payton, and Brad Rigby reached the title game before falling to Oklahoma. Tech’s CWS record is 3-1, while its all-time record in NCAA play is 42-36, including a 23-14 mark under head coach Danny Hall, who also led Tech to its first CWS berth.
Tech and the Gamecocks met earlier this year with South Carolina winning, 8-3, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. South Carolina leads the series, 32-13-1
