THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior running backs Justice Haynes (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford H.S.) and Malachi Hosley (Columbus, Ga./Northside H.S.) are both among the 62 honorees on the official preseason watch list for the 2026 Doak Walker Award, which was announced on Monday. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to college football’s most outstanding running back.
Georgia Tech is one of only seven teams represented by multiple players on this preseason’s Doak Walker Award watch list. Florida State, Indiana, Kansas, Liberty, Penn State and Texas are the others.
Haynes and Hosley headline one of the nation’s premier running back rooms. They were two of only eight NCAA Division I FBS players that averaged at least seven yards per carry last season, with Hosley ranking sixth nationally at 7.11 yards per rush and Haynes coming in right behind him with 7.08 yards per carry in 2025 (min. 75 rushing attempts).
Haynes ran for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns in just seven games as a junior at Michigan last season, eclipsing 100 yards on the ground in 6-of-7 contests. His 7.1 yards per carry and 122.4 yards per game led the Big Ten and would’ve ranked second and third nationally had he not fallen just two games shy of qualifying for the final NCAA rankings.
Hosley ran for 697 yards and seven touchdowns on just 98 carries last season at Georgia Tech. He had three 100-yard rushing games – 100 vs. Gardner-Webb, 129 vs. Virginia Tech and 107 against Boston College – and was an honorable mention all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, as well as a member of the all-ACC academic team.
Ten semifinalists and three finalists for the 2026 Doak Walker Award will be selected in November, and the 37th recipient of the honor will be announced on Dec. 10 as a part of The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Haynes, Hosley and the Yellow Jackets open the season on Thursday, Sept. 3 versus Colorado. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field and the opener will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Georgia Tech posted a 9-4 overall record (tied for the 10th-most victories in Tech’s 133-season football history) and No. 24 final national ranking in 2025. The Jackets rose to as high as No. 7 in the national rankings and were ranked in the final 14 national polls of the season, which was their longest streak since Tech was ranked in all 16 polls in 1999.
Georgia Tech also went 6-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play in ‘25, which was good for a tie for second place in the 17-team conference. The Yellow Jackets are the only ACC team that has finished in the top four of the conference standings each of the last three seasons.
Full Steam Ahead
Full Steam Ahead is a $500 million fundraising initiative to achieve Georgia Tech athletics’ goal of competing for championships at the highest level in the next era of intercollegiate athletics.
