Tech Drops 5-2 Decision At No. 4 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The 12th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (11-8, 4-5 ACC) wasn’t able to earn a road victory at the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (20-2, 9-0 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Yellow Jackets landed the first blow in doubles action, securing a win from the number one pair of Jillian O’Neill and Caroline Lilley over Duke’s Rachel Kahan and Ellah Nze, 8-4. The Blue Devils claimed an 8-6 win on court three from the 72nd ranked team of Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton over Tech’s Viet Ha Ngo and Sasha Krupina, 8-6.

Duke took the early advantage, 1-0, heading into singles play with a 9-7 win by Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar over the Jackets’ Elizabeth Kilborn and Lynn Blau on court two.

The Blue Devils claimed wins from the number five and six spots of the lineup to put Duke up 3-0. Ranked No. 64, Mary Clayton downed Tech’s Kilborn 6-4, 6-2 on court six and Rachel Kahan earned a 6-4, 6-3 over the Jackets’ Krupina on court five.

Duke’s 45th-ranked Fahoum bested Tech’s 46th-ranked O’Neill, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, to clinch the Blue Devils’ win.

Tech’s Blau earned the Yellow Jackets’ first point of the afternoon with a come from behind, three set win over Duke’s No. 59 Elizabeth Plotkin, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3), on court four. Playing the third spot of the lineup, Duke’s No. 13 Reka Zsilinszka beat Tech’s Ngo, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). The Jackets’ second point came on court two with another three-set win as Lilley topped Duke’s Nze, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Tech will be back at home for the final weekend of the season when the Jackets host No. 56 Virginia Tech at noon Saturday and No. 18 Virginia at noon on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center, and are free and open to the public.
