Tech Cross Country Runs Well at NCAA Pre-Nationals

Oct. 18, 2008

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams ran well against some of the top teams in the nation at the NCAA Pre-National meet on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The men took 31st place and the women 36th, scoring 792 and 953 points respectively.

“We’ve just come off the heaviest training period of the season so they’re a little tired,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “But overall the effort was there today from both teams.”

Freshman Mary Kate DuBard again led the way for the Yellow Jacket women, finishing in 97th-place with a time of 21:49 in the 6,000 meter race. Following DuBard was freshman Annie Martin with a time of 22:28 and freshman Betsy Kim with a time of 23:10. Rounding out the top five for the Jackets was senior Veronica Kinard in a time of 23:13, and junior Lindsey Pickens crossing the line in 23:13.

The nation’s top-ranked Washington Huskies took the team title with an overall score of 36 points.

On the men’s side, senior E.C. Gibbs led Tech for the third-straight race with a 25:08 run in the men’s 8,000 meter race. Gibbs finished in 126th place. Junior Billy Mateker crossed the line in 25:19, just one second ahead of senior Nazar Trilisky’s 25:20. Following Trilisky was junior Matt Hickey and senior Casey Gramling, running a time of 25:27 and 25:38 respectively.

Stanford, ranked No. 2 nationally, won the men’s race with a combined time of 119:22.10.

“The men grouped up fairly well and we saw some good improvement in the top five,” Drosky added. “But both teams still have some work to do in getting ready for the ACC meet.”

Both teams will be back in action in two weeks at the ACC Championships on Nov. 1 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
