THE FLATS – Georgia Tech Swimming and Diving will compete in two meets this weekend against UNC on Friday, Nov. 5 and Duke on Saturday, Nov. 6.
The pair of North Carolina meets start in Chapel Hill on Friday at 11 a.m. when the divers start the day’s action. An hour later the swimmers will get started at noon. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets head to Durham to face the Blue Devils. Divers start the day at 9:30 a.m. followed up by the swimmers at 11 a.m.
Tech men’s swimming and diving is ranked No. 19 in the country. UNC men’s side is ranked No. 21 while the women’s side is ranked No. 15. Duke women’s side is ranked No. 24 in the nation.
The White and Gold are coming off a pair of close loses at home on Oct. 23 against Florida State. The No. 19 ranked men’s side lost by two points to the No. 15 ranked Florida State men. The meet came down to the final event and 0.46 separated victory and defeat.
The women’s team kept it close with Florida State and freshman Defne Taçyildiz set the freshman record in the 200 fly. Her time was also good for third all-time in program history.
Two Yellow Jackets were honored with weekly conference awards. Caio Pumputis won the men’s swimmer of the week honor in the ACC after the Florida State meet. Pumputis holds the seventh best time in the nation in the 100 breast (52.96) and third best time in the 200 breast (1:55.32). These are the top times in the ACC in those events.
Camryn Hidalgo took home the women’s diver of the week honor in the ACC following her performance against Florida State. Hidalgo turned in two zone qualifying scores on the 1-meter board (307.35) and 3-meter board (362.55). These scores were some of the best for an opening meet in the All-American’s career.
