Stewart Named Academic All-District

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech place kicker Gavin Stewart (Savannah, Ga./Benedictine Military Academy) has been named Academic All-District for recognition of his exemplary academic and athletic achievements, the College Sports Communicators organization announced on Tuesday.

Stewart has been nearly perfect for Georgia Tech in 2022, both on the field and in the classroom. On the field, he has made 12-of-13 field goal attempts since becoming the Yellow Jackets’ primary place kicker prior to the fifth game of the season. He made his first 12 attempts of the season, becoming the first Tech kicker in at least 40 years to make his first 10 kicks of a campaign, before his first miss, which came on an errant snap and hold. His .923 field goal percentage ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 11th nationally.

In the classroom, Stewart has a 3.92 cumulative grade point average as a business administration major. He’s a member of Georgia Tech’s dean’s list and the Atlantic Coast Conference academic honor roll.

A sophomore, Stewart follows in the footsteps of his brother, Brad, who was a two-time Academic All-District honoree as a wide receiver at Georgia Tech from 2015-18.

With Academic All-District honors in hand, Stewart advances to the Academic All-America ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-Americans will be announced in late December.

Stewart and the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 4-4 ACC) close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to archrival and top-ranked Georgia (11-0, 8-0 SEC). Kickoff for “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” is set for noon at UGA’s Sanford Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Competitive Drive Initiative

In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
