Mark Smith is in his 14th overall season as a member of Georgia Tech’s sports medicine staff and his first as the Yellow Jackets’ director of sports medicine (football).

Smith, who served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Georgia Tech from 2010-12, returned to The Flats as an assistant athletic trainer in 2013, then was promoted to head football athletic trainer in 2018 following the retirement of longtime head athletic trainer Jay Shoop. He became Tech’s director of sports medicine (football) in 2024.

Smith’s return to Tech in a full-time capacity in ’13 followed a short stint in the same role at Georgia State. Prior to his time at Georgia State, he completed a year-long internship with the Buffalo Bills. During his two years as a G.A. at Tech, his duties consisted primarily of working with swimming and diving and assisting with football.

His professional experience also includes a summer internship with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010.

Smith is a NATABOC certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association and he is licensed by the state of Georgia as an athletic trainer.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from The College at Brockport, a State University of New York in 2010.

Mark is the proud father to his two children, Brady and Remy.
