General

Energetic and tough-minded combo guard who could break down defenses off the dribble and get hot from three-point range … Tough, physical and aggressive player who was never afraid to make the big play.

Often played well in big games, as he tallied double figures against No. 5 Florida, No. 18 USC and No. 3 Oklahoma as a freshman at Arizona … Came up big for the Yellow Jackets in the 2004 NCAA Tournament as well, making game-winning shots in three of Tech’s tournament victories (details below).

Shot 40.4 percent in his time at Tech (39.3 pct. vs. ACC), compared with 34.7 percent at Arizona … Had 688 points in less than two full seasons in a Yellow Jacket uniform (947 in his collegiate career) … Averaged 11.1 points in a Yellow Jacket uniform, 11.6 ppg vs. the ACC.

Transferred to Tech after a season and a half at Arizona in order to give his mother a better opportunity to see him play … Made an official visit to Tech as a high school senior before deciding to attend Arizona … Became eligible at Tech following fall semester (2003) exams … Began practicing with the Yellow Jackets in early January of 2003 and participated in Tech’s spring strength and conditioning workouts and individual instruction.

2004-05

Worked hard in the weight room over the summer and made himself stronger and quicker than his junior season … Proved once again how he could rise to the occasion with big performances in the ACC Tournament, including a Tech tournament-record 35 points in the Yellow Jackets semifinal win over North Carolina … Went 10-of-21 from the floor, both career highs, 5-of-10 from three-point range and 10-of-12 from the foul line, constantly scoring big baskets and answering Tar Heel runs.

Earned first-team All-Tournament honors, also scoring 13 against Virginia Tech and 14 against Duke in the tournament, forging an average of 20.7 for the three games … Was 19-of-23 from the foul line (82.6 pct.) in the tournament.

Averaged 12.5 points in two NCAA tournament games, including 17 points in first-round win over George Washington.

Scored key points in Tech[apos]s three road wins down the stretch … Notched 13 (5-7 FG) at Clemson on 2/8 … At FSU, scored seven points off the bench (3-7 FG) with an assist and no turnovers … At Miami, scored all seven of his points on free throws in the final 2:26 … Even in the loss at Wake Forest on 3/2, scored 12 points (5-5 FT) with six assists and no turnovers.

Scored in double figures in six straight games between Virginia Tech on 1/22 and Clemson on 2/8, a first for his career, and averaged 18.3 points over that stretch … Included performances of 28 points against Virginia Tech, 30 against Wake Forest and 19 against Florida State … Shot 43.0 percent (17 threes made) from three-point range and 86.2 percent (25-of-29) from the foul line … Made the game-winning three-point shot in Tech[apos]s 64-61 win over Florida State (2/2) with 2.7 seconds left.

Notched Tech[apos]s top four scoring games of the season … His 30 points against Wake Forest (7-17 FG, 11-of-12 FT) were a career-high before his 35 against UNC … Scored 28 on two occasions earlier in the year against Gonzaga (9-16 FG, 7-8 FT) and Virginia Tech (9-14 FG, 7-8 FT) … Reached double figures 19 times in all (42 times in his career).

Ranked 23rd in the ACC in scoring at 12.5 points per game, ninth in free throw percentage (76.2) … Averaged 12.1 points in regular-season ACC games (third on the Tech team), and 2.4 assists … Shot 37.3 percent from the floor and 82.0 percent from the foul line in conference games.

While Elder was injured, Bynum averaged 14.7 points, 12.4 shot attempts per game, 5.8 three-point attempts per game and shot 77.1 percent (37-of-48) from the foul line … At times was beset by his own hard-nosed play, wearing himself down by playing with reckless abandon … Endured a concussion at North Carolina and played with the flu.

His scoring production varied, but he involved others more (2.46 assists per game) … Had 38 assists vs. 29 turnovers in regular-season ACC games, the best ratio on the team … Matched a career-high with seven assists against Miami (1/6) and did not have a turnover, and had six assists with no turnovers at Wake Forest (3/2), his two high games.

Struggled overall from three-point range (31.0 pct.), but had his moments (3-5 vs, Michigan, 2-6 vs. James Madison, 3-8 vs. Gonzaga, 2-6 vs. Miami, 3-6 vs. Virginia Tech, 5-9 vs. Wake Forest, 3-5 vs. Clemson, 5-10 vs. North Carolina).

2003-04

Always gave the Jackets a spark off the bench on both ends of the floor … Led the team in scoring four times and notched all 11 of his double-figure points games after the beginning of January.

In the NCAA Tournament: Provided the key play off the bench in three of Tech[apos]s five NCAA Tournament wins … His spectacular driving, reverse layup with a minute left against Nevada put the Jackets ahead for good in the 72-67 victory … Finished with nine points against the Wolf Pack … Against Kansas, he nailed a three-pointer with 1:53 left in overtime, again putting Tech ahead for good … Had eight points, including two three-pointers against the Jayhawks … Scored the game-winning bucket against Oklahoma State on a layup with 1.5 seconds left, driving around a Luke Schenscher screen for a layup.

Averaged 14.0 points and 3.0 assists in the two Final Four games, including 11 against the Cowboys and a team-high 17 against Connecticut, and made the all-tournament team … Made 9 of 17 field goals, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.

For the entire NCAA Tournament, averaged 9.3 points, third on the team, hit 50 percent of his field goals (20-of-40) and 47.4 percent of his threes (9-of-19).

Scored 41 points in the three Tech games prior to Tech[apos]s Feb. 22 game with Wake Forest, 17 against North Carolina, 12 at Virginia and 12 at Maryland … Hit 13 of 24 shots from the floor in the process … Went 8-for-9 from the foul line against the Tar Heels.

Found going difficult in his last six games entering the NCAA Tournament, averaging 5.2 points and 2.0 assists while hitting just 10 of 30 shots from the floor … Scored five points with four assists at Duke Mar. 3 … Missed Tech[apos]s regular-season finale against Florida State with a hip pointer.

Tech[apos]s fourth-leading scorer for the season (9.6 ppg) who shot 41.3 percent from the floor, 35.1 percent from three-point range and 76.7 percent from the line … Averaged 2.5 assists.

In ACC games only: Tech[apos]s third-leading scorer at 11.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.27 apg, 41.9% FG, 36.7% 3FG, 85.7% FT … Ranked 20th in the league in scoring, tied for 3rd in free throw percentage.

Shot 76.3 percent from the line against Top 25 teams, 85.7 percent in ACC games and 87.0 percent (20-of-23) in ACC games on the road.

2001-02 (Freshman at Arizona)

Averaged 6.4 points and 1.4 assists as a freshman … Ranked second on the team with a .583 FG percentage in the Pac-10 Tournament … Shot just .344 (73-of-212) on the year, but was slightly better in conference play at .375 … Posted three straight double-figure scoring efforts twice during the year (vs. Valpo, Oregon and Oregon State/California, Arizona State and California) … Finished the year with nine double-figure scoring games.
