2025 (Freshman): Alex Hernandez took the college baseball world by storm, breaking Matt Weiters’ 20-year old Georgia Tech freshman record for RBI in a single season and leading all Power 4 first years with 69 RBI…Was named ACC Freshman of the Year and 1st Team Freshman All-America by four different publications (NCBWA, Baseball America, Perfect Game and D1 Baseball)…Became the 7th Yellow Jacket to be named ACC Freshman of the Year…the second of back-to-back ACC Freshman of the Year honors for GT (also Drew Burress in 2024) marking just the second time Tech has achieved that and first since Nomar Garciaparra (1992), and Jason Varitek (1991)…Played and started in 59 games, missing just one due to injury… Reached base in each of his first 17 games…launched a grand slam for his first-career homerun, one of two grand slams he’d hit on the year…Started in six different spots this year: 2nd Base (27), Right Field (14), 1st Base (7), Left Field (7), DH (4) and pitcher (1)…started 48 games in the cleanup spot and delivered a team-high 69 RBI while slashing .335/.415/.609…Led the Jackets in at bats (230), hits (77 – tied with Vahn Lackey) and RBI (69)…finished with 47 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples and 16 home runs, serving as the primary RBI man for a lineup that proved to be one of the most potent in the country…WithHernandez in the lineup, Tech delivered the 4th highest OPS among Power 4 teams (.956). The Jacket offense led the nation in doubles (149) and sacrifice flies (40) and posted the best batting average in the ACC (.315)…A 2025 Regular season ACC Champion, Hernandez was the only underclassmen in Division I with 50+ RBI (69) and multiple saves (2) and is the first player in college baseball to record at least 55 RBI and multiple saves in his freshman season since 2022, when 2024 1st Round pick Braden Montgomery did so at Stanford…appeared in six games on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings with a 6.14 ERA and two saves…Saved his best performances for when they mattered most, posting a team-high eight RBI over three games in the Oxford Regional, including a season-high six RBI in the victory over Western Kentucky, the most by a GT player in an NCAA Tournament game since 1996…Hit a home run in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in Durham, N.C., helping Tech set an ACC Tournament record for the most home runs in a single game, with seven…delivered a 4-for-4 showing against Cal (April 11) a part of a stretch in which he reached base on 11 straight plate appareances over three games (April 8-12).
Finished his freshman season leading all Power 4 freshmen in RBI (69) and was third in slugging (.609), third in hits (77), third in HR (16), fourth in OPS (1.024), sixth in batting average (.335).
High School: Rated as the No. 8 third baseman in the country, the 96th overall prospect in his class and the 12th best recruit out of the state of Georgia by Perfect Game … A two-year letterwinner at Forsyth Central, playing third base and pitching … batted .398 with 12 home runs at 48 RBI acrss two years of high school whike maintaining a 1.54 ERA across 22 starts on the mound … Named 7A 1st Team All-State in 2024 by the Georgia Dugout Club … Awarded Prep Baseball Georgia’s All-Upperclass Team in 2024 as well.
