Nov. 24, 2003

Football standout Jonathan Smith, men’s basketball player Jarrett Jack and Fallon Stokes, a women’s basketball team member, were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, November 24, 2003.

Smith, a senior from Argyle, Ga., returned a punt for a touchdown for the second week in a row. He became the first player in Tech history to return punts for touchdowns in back-to-back games. His 80-yard return was the longest by a Yellow Jacket since 1972. Last week against North Carolina, he had a 73-yard touchdown return. Smith now leads the ACC in punt returns with a 12.8-yard average on 26 returns. Smith had a total of 171 all-purpose yards in the game, including nine receptions for 91 yards. He is second in the ACC in all-purpose yards with 129.0 per game, as well as second in receptions (6.0 per game) and receiving yards (92.4 per game).

Jack, a sophomore from Fort Washington, Md., led Georgia Tech to victories in its first three games of the season – Preseason NIT wins over Louisiana-Lafayette (79-45), Hofstra (75-56) and a road contest against Cornell (90-69) – averaging 14.7 points and 10.0 assists while directing a Tech offense that is averaging 81.3 points a game and shooting 50.3 percent from the floor. He dished out 11 assists each against ULL and Hofstra, scoring 11 against the Ragin Cajuns and 12 against the Pride. Sunday, in Tech’s first road game, Jack matched his career high with 21 points while handing out eight assists as Tech pulled away in the second half to the 21-point win. Jack shot 61.5 percent from the floor, including 5-of-6 against ULL and 8-of-12 against Cornell. He went 5-of-11 from three-point range (45.5 percent) and averaged 5.7 rebounds while making 11 steals.

Stokes, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., led the Jackets to a 73-62 victory over Florida Atlantic and recorded her first double-double of the year as she led all players with 25 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. She scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds just in the first half against the Lady Owls, giving Tech a 42-21 lead going into the locker room.
