THE FLATS – Georgia Tech receivers DeAndre Smelter and Darren Waller have been invited to participate at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, which will be held Feb. 17-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The duo is among the 323 players to receive an invite. Much of the action from the six-day combine will be broadcast on NFL Network.
Smelter, a native of Macon, Ga., was a second-team All-ACC receiver by the league’s coaches and a third-team selection by ACSMA as a senior in 2014. He started in 12 games, leading the Jackets with 35 receptions for 715 yards and seven touchdowns. He missed the final two games – Florida State and Mississippi State – due to injury. He finished his career with 1,060 receiving yards, ranking 21st on Georgia Tech’s all-time list. His 18.9 yards per reception average ranks fifth on Tech’s career list.
Smelter, who only played two years of college football after playing three seasons of baseball for the Yellow Jackets, graduated from Georgia Tech in December 2014 with his bachelor’s degree in management.
Waller became the Jackets’ top receiving target in 2014 after Smelter’s injury. The Acworth, Ga., product caught 26 passes for 442 yards and six touchdowns. He hauled in a career-high 114 yards in Tech’s Orange Bowl win. A December 2014 graduate with a degree in management, Waller concluded his career with 971 receiving yards on 51 receptions.
Georgia Tech finished the 2014 season 11-3 en route to winning the 2014 ACC Coastal Division and Capital One Orange Bowl.
