Smelter, Davis Named ACC Players of the Week

Nov. 17, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – DeAndre Smelter and P.J. Davis were honored as ACC Receiver and Linebacker of the Week, respectively, by the league office on Monday. Georgia Tech’s 10 ACC weekly honors this season are the most by the Jackets in a single season.

It was the first career ACC weekly honor for Smelter and the second this season for Davis.

Smelter, a native of Macon, Ga., led all receivers with five catches for 77 yards and a TD in Georgia Tech’s 28-6 win over No. 19 Clemson. Smelter’s 5-yard TD reception in the third quarter was Tech’s first offensive score of the game. In the fourth quarter, his 18-yard catch on Tech’s first drive made him the 21st 1,000-yard receiver in school history. Smelter has 1,016 career receiving yards on 53 receptions in 24 games.

Davis earned his second ACC Player of the Week honor of the season after leading the Jackets’ defense with 13 tackles. His 13 tackles were the second double-digit tackles game of the season and one shy of a career high (14 at Pit). He added one TFL for a 7-yard loss. Davis and the Jackets defense held Clemson to six points – the fewest by a Top 25 team vs. Georgia Tech since 2007 when No. 13 Clemson scored three in a 13-3 loss. Davis leads all Tech defenders with 90 tackles.
