THE FLATS – Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) hauled in several national recognitions on Monday following his performance in the Yellow Jackets’ 45-22 win over No. 21/20 North Carolina on Saturday evening at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Sims, who accounted for 240 total yards and four touchdowns in a little more than a half of play, was named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 and Manning Award Stars of the Week lists, which both recognize college football’s top eight quarterbacks of the week. Additionally, Sims was tabbed by ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit as his No. 6 top-performing player of the week.

After the previous two games due to an injury sustained in Georgia Tech’s Sept. 4 season opener versus Northern Illinois, Sims entered Saturday’s game against UNC late in the second quarter and led Tech to scores on six of the seven series that he quarterbacked (five touchdowns and a field goal), kneel-downs at the end of each half notwithstanding.

Sims was especially effective on the ground, rushing for a career-high 128 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries (12.8 avg.). In the passing game, he was an efficient 10-for-13 for 112 yards and a touchdown. His 174.68 pass-efficiency rating was the second-highest of his career, behind only the 183.41 rating he compiled in last season’s 46-27 home win over Louisville.
Monday’s honors mark the second time in his career that Sims has been named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 and Manning Award Star of the Week lists. He also earned the recognitions following his first-career start, last season’s 16-13 Tech win at Florida State.
In addition to Sims’ honor, Herbstreit also recognized Georgia Tech as his No. 7 top-performing team of the week.
