Silverio Fights Through Consolations at All-American Championships

Oct. 4, 2006

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Alison Silverio continued her strong play in the qualifying tournament at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, fighting for a three-set victory against Marion Raveljaona of California to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Silverio recorded a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory in her lone singles match on the day and will play Southern California’s Sarah Fansler in the quarterfinals Thursday morning.

The Georgia Tech junior also competed in the second round of the doubles tournament, teaming with sophomore Kristi Miller, but the duo dropped an 8-1 match to USC’s Amanda Fink and Judy DeVera in the second round to be eliminated from the event.

Miller will begin play in the main draw of the singles bracket Thursday afternoon.

Yellow Jacket junior Tarryn Rudman was the only other Tech player to compete Wednesday, as she dropped a three-set match to Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, to conclude her competition in the tournament.

The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season – the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila – is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season. The Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships (its men’s counterpart, the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships takes place at the University of Tulsa at the same time), the Nov. 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis’ three national championship events during the season.

The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.

The Oct. 5-8 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament was Sept. 31-Oct. 1 at UCLA and eight players and four doubles teams advanced from there to the Oct. 3-4 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw).
